FAQ

Q1. Do you import kimonos from Japan?

Yes, our owner travels to Japan and carefully chooses kimonos one by one for the store.

Q2. Are the kimonos secondhand?

Yes, our kimonos are mostly vintage, as kimonos are usually custom-made from kimono fabric (silk, W0.36m x L12m) by hand-sewing. Our pre-owned vintage kimonos are mostly dry-cleaned and disinfected.

Q3. How old are the kimonos?

Our vintage kimonos are mainly from 1950s to present, and the kimonos made before 1940s are considered as antique, even collectible.

Q4. To dress a kimono traditionally, how do I find my size?

The size of a kimono is determined by your height, hip size and arm length. The sizes of our kimonos adapt for height between 145cm and 170cm, hip size between 85cm and 100cm, arm length (center to wrist) between 60cm and 68cm. Japanese women are relatively short and thin. To find the best-suited kimono for you, please ask our assistance at the store.

Q5. Are there any rules to dress in a kimono in a traditional way?

There are different types of kimonos for seasons and occasions. Ask us for the coordination.

Q6. What accessories do I need dress myself in a kimono in a traditional manner?

You need a kimono, obi, under wear, juban, some waist cords, and some other small accessories. Ask us for further information at our store.

Q7. Does Kimono Vintage have kimonos for men?

Yes we do, but quantity is limited and sizes are rather small in silk kimonos. We have Yukatas (casual summer kimono in cotton) for men in larger sizes.

Q8. How should I take care of kimonos?

Silk kimonos must be dry-cleaned by a reputable dry cleaner. We recommend dry cleaning in a laundry net. Fold it flat and keep it away from humidity and light to avoid color fade.

Q9. Do you make, alter or repair kimonos at Kimono Vintage?

No, we don’t. Kimonos are made or altered by trained kimono sewers in Japan.

Q10. What is the average price range?

Kimono $200 - $500 Obi $150 - $350 Haori $100 - $250 Yukata $50 - $120 Obi for yukata $30 - $75

Q11. Do you offer a dressing service?

We offer a traditional kimono dressing service (kitsuke) by appointment. The fee starts at $80 for a casual kimono, $100 for a formal kimono.
